Iran Declares Its Desire To Participate In 2026 World Cup
On Saturday, the Football Federation of Iran (FFIRI) announced that its national team will still participate in the 2026 World Cup (June 11-July 19), but demanded a series of guarantees from FIFA and host nations regarding participation in the tournament.
In its latest statement, the FFIRI affirmed that Iran will participate in the World Cup “without abandoning our beliefs, culture, and values,” and stressed that host nations “must take our concerns into account.”
This move comes after FFIRI President Mehdi Taj was denied entry into Canada ahead of the FIFA Congress last month.
Ten Conditions Sent to FIFA
Mr. Taj later revealed that Iran had sent FIFA 10 conditions for participating in the World Cup, which will begin on June 11th in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Among the published demands was a guarantee of visas for all players, coaching staff, and officials accompanying the team, including those who had completed military service in the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The IRGC is currently listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and Canada. Mehdi Taj’s connection to this force is believed to be one of the reasons he was denied entry into Canada.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously stated that Iranian players would be welcomed at the World Cup. However, he also warned that individuals with ties to the IRGC could still face entry restrictions into the US.

Some other demands from the Iranian Football Federation are also considered difficult to implement in practice. According to sources, the Iranian side requested that journalists avoid asking questions outside the scope of “technical football matters.”
